Prague-Glasgow Summer School in Economics

The Prague-Glasgow Summer School in Economics was held in cooperation with the University of Glasgow and its Adam Smith Business School in the week from 24th June to 29th June.

On Monday 24 June, Dr Pavel Potužák opened the event with his lecture Taylor rule in the context of optimal monetary policy. He introduced the students to the Taylor rule as a reaction function of the central bank and then focused on the zero lower bound on the nominal interest rate and possible solutions to this problem. The lecture was followed by a visit to Prague’s sights in the afternoon programme, when the Czech students showed their Glasgow colleagues, for example, Prague Castle and Petrin Hill.

On Tuesday morning, Dr. Vojtěch Kotrba prepared a lecture Beyond Homo Economicus: Unveiling the Veil of mainstream Economics and exploring economic realities through experiments, which was also connected with several experiments carried out in the Laboratory of Experimental Economics (LEE). In the afternoon, the students visited the Czech National Bank and its visitor section, where they could see, among other things, the second largest gold coin in the world. The students were welcomed at the CNB by Dr. Karina Kubelková, a member of the Bank’s Board, and Dr. Lucia Bartůsková, a lecturer from the FE.

Wednesday’s programme was prepared by a delegation from Glasgow, more precisely by Prof. Michele Battisti, who presented on Labour market polarisation in the era of generative AI.

Thursday’s speaker was Dr. Geethanjali Selvaretnam and she spoke to the students on The stability of unions. The afternoon programme included a field trip to the DRFG Investment Group, which sponsored the entire summer school, where the students learned about the various parts of DRFG and their activities.

The lecture series concluded on Friday with Dr. Mridula Duggal on Tell me something you know: Beliefs about the Macroeconomy.
The whole event was concluded with a banquet at the Vencovsky Club, which was also attended by the Dean of the FE Dr. Adéla Zubíková and the Vice-Dean for International Relations Assoc. Helena Chytilová.

On Saturday, a voluntary program was prepared for the students in the form of a visit to Karlštejn Castle.
