The next Innovation Week is coming up during the 9th week of the semester. As always, there will be no standard teaching during this week and instead many exciting events will be organised for you! The main goal of Innovation Week is to modernize the teaching at the VŠE, deepen its practical dimension and make your studies at the VŠE more interesting and fun.

The Faculty of Economics is actively involved in this event with a number of interesting activities, an overview of which can be found below. More activities will be added gradually in the coming weeks. You can look forward not only to the events at Žižkov, but also to excursions and trips outside the VŠE campus.

Don’t miss this great opportunity to deepen your practical knowledge, learn new things and meet lots of new people, including lecturers, classmates and practitioners. If you have any questions about individual events, please do not hesitate to reach out to the contact person listed for each event. If you have general questions about the Innovation Week, you can contact the Vice-Dean for International Relations, doc. Ing. Helena Chytilova, Ph.D., M.A.

Artificial Intelligence: Ethics and Cognition in the Digital Age

Lecture by Juraj Hvorecký

  • When: April 10, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM
  • Where: RB 213
  • Description: In debates about the ethics of deploying deep learning networks, numerous cases of bias, profiling, or discrimination are discussed. Typically, the blame for documented transgressions falls on the involved people: the networks were trained on flawed data sets, inappropriately applied in new domains, or were even constructed with ill intentions. In our lecture, we will show that in the case of supervised machine learning, the situation is much more complicated and it seems that the error could be in the deployment of deep learning networks themselves. Their epistemology is not compatible with ours, which also has direct ethical implications. Particularly in areas where it is important to pay attention to robust human categories, the deployment of networks may not be suitable at all.

Corporate Inequality and Disadvantage in the Workplace: Payroll Evidence from a Financial Sector Firm

  • Kdy: 11. 4. 2024, od 12:45 do 14:15
  • Kde: RB 437
  • Popis (abstrakt): We analyse the determinants of earnings for both managerial and staff employees, using a unique dataset from a large financial sector firm. The returns to college are associated with 9% higher salaries compared to workers with lower education, even after controlling for general and firm experience, hierarchical position, performance ratings, gender, ethnicity and several other factors. Returns to college are larger for inexperienced workers, while returns to experience are greater for low-educated workers. Managers have higher returns to general experience compared to staff workers and negative returns to firm tenure. When performance is good wages are almost two times higher for college graduates and for managers, whereas only low-educated workers are penalized for bad performance. A large fraction of the returns to education functions through job hierarchy, while the inclusion of performance measures does not influence the impact of schooling on earnings. Returns to experience and firm tenure are similar for high and low-educated workers in the first five years but become insignificant subsequently for highly educated workers. Asymmetric information is a key factor explaining the combination of these findings related to earnings inequality.
